Cemetery resource protection training

Northeast Region coordinator Amber Weiss invited Historic City News readers to participate when Florida Public Archaeology Network holds Cemetery Resource Protection Training on September 27, 2011.

This month’s training about cemetery care and preservation will take place at the historic Price-Martin House; located at 220 N 11th Street in Palatka starting at 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

“We will explore cemeteries as historical resources,” Weiss told Historic City News. “Preserving historic cemeteries and human burial sites is important to protecting our cultural heritage.”

Network staff members will also discuss the laws that protect cemeteries, managing cemetery landscapes and the significance of conserving headstones and markers.

Those attending will get some “hands-on” practice; cleaning headstones using a D-2 cleaning solution.

Register with Amber by calling 904-819-6498 as soon as possible; the class size is limited to 20 participants. Registration fees are $15 per living person.

There will be additional workshops announced for St. Augustine, Fernandina Beach, Ponce Inlet and Tampa in the coming months.

The Florida Public Archaeology Network is dedicated to the protection of cultural resources, both on land and underwater, and to involving the public in the study of their past. Regional centers around Florida serve as clearinghouses for information, institutions for learning and training, and headquarters for public participation in archaeology.
