Living history day at Fort Mose

Park Service Specialist Terri Newmans told local Historic City News reporters that Fort Mose State Park will host a historic interpretation of 18th-century life presented by members of the Presidiales of St. Augustine later this month.

The re-enactors strive for high standards in historical interpretation and support educational initiatives that promote a greater understanding and appreciation of our rich and diverse heritage. Included in the day’s events will be a colonial Florida culinary demonstration and children’s activities when the park opens on October 29, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

This Living History Day will also be a “training day” to help prepare the members of Los Presidiales and the Fort Mose Militia for future heritage events; such as Flight to Freedom and the Battle of Bloody Mose.

Fort Mose Historic State Park in St. Augustine is the site of the first, legally sanctioned free black settlement in the continental United States, established in 1738.

Florida Living History, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to educating the public about Florida’s colonial and territorial history, from the time of Don Juan Ponce de León’s first landing in 1513 to the time of Florida’s statehood in 1845, using living history programs, demonstrations, and re-created portrayals of significant historical events.
