St. Johns County Fire Rescue spokesperson, Jeremy Robshaw, informed Historic City News that personnel were dispatched this afternoon to a reported Level III emergency at the Northeast Florida Regional Airport at St. Augustine.
Upon arrival, emergency rescue personnel identified a fixed wing single-engine P-51D Mustang, off the runway and occupied by a pilot and one passenger.
Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Neil Mariotti investigated the incident and determined that, after landing on Runway-31, the right side landing gear collapsed.
According to Mariotti’s report, this caused the aircraft to turn clockwise and taxi onto the grassy shoulder.
The aircraft sustained damage to its right wing and the right side of the undercarriage.
St. Johns Fire Rescue evaluated the occupants and assisted in containing a small fuel leak then cleared the call without further incident.
The pilot, identified as Daniel M. McCue who resides in Ponte Vedra Beach, and his passenger, Lance Weston of Jacksonville Beach, were the only two aboard; neither sustained any injuries.
According to the FAA registration, the aircraft is owned by Leestown Aviation, Inc., located in Wilmington, DE.
“Insurance that would cover the damage, if any, is unknown,” Mariotti reported. “The aircraft removal was handled by the pilot in co-operation with the airport authority. There was no damage to any airport authority property.”
