Ali Fulcher wants to remind Historic City News readers of a fun way to begin your Thanksgiving Day and benefit St. Francis House at the same time — the seventh annual “Shut Up and Run” event.
Seven years ago, runner Sally Howes created a small three-mile race on Thanksgiving Day so people could feel a little less guilty for eating an extra slice of pie.
Howes is a member of Ancient City Road Runners; a group of runners that meet up several times during the week to run. The members also tend to meet and gather to socialize after spending so much time hitting the pavement together.
The annual “Shut Up and Run” event has also become a fund raiser for the St. Francis House homeless shelter.
“It’s Thanksgiving, and I figure people are thankful for what they have and they want to give back,” Howes said.
“I feel really blessed for all the support we’ve gotten,” St. Francis House executive director Renee Morris said. “This just means so much to us.”
