Lindsay Skelly, Tallahassee’s Mission San Luis Lead Educator, reported to Historic City News that Derek Boyd Hankerson will be the featured presenter at the upcoming monthly Historical Happenings lecture at Mission San Luis.
Hankerson, who is a frequent guest columnist and contributor to Historic City News, will discuss the origin and history of the National Underground Railroad in his presentation, as well as the roles of Fort Mose and Spanish Florida in its formation.
Fort Mose is part of the Network to Freedom, a collection of sites, facilities and programs associated with the Underground Railroad.
Resources of the Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Project are used to educate the public about the extensive historical significance of the Underground Railroad.
Hankerson, who lives in St. Augustine, serves as Managing Partner of Freedom Road, LLC. He has been a leader in numerous community projects in support of Fort Mose, multicultural education and heritage tourism.
The program is scheduled to take place on December 5, 2009, in the new Visitor Center from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
Note: Since the Tennessee St. entrance is not open yet, please park in the lot on Mission Rd. Follow the sidewalk past the Messer House (the old Visitor Center) to the back entrance of the new building. Call 850-487-3711 for more information.
