Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas National Monuments in St Augustine have a new Chief of Interpretation, according to an announcement received by Historic City News last week.
Born and raised in Washington State, Ranger Jon Burpee most recently served as the Chief of Interpretation at Fort Frederica National Monument; where he has been assigned since 2004.
Previously, Burpee worked as a park guide and ranger at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, Vancouver National Historic Reserve and Death Valley National Park.
Burpee graduated from the University of Washington with an undergraduate degree in history. He is currently pursuing a Master of Resource Interpretation from Stephen F. Austin State University.
His wife, Julie, formerly worked as a park ranger in six different national parks. Together they have a five year-old son, Thomas, and an 18 month-old daughter, Susannah. Julie is currently a teacher.
The entire Burpee family participates in living history events so you will be seeing them around the Castillo and Fort Matanzas.
