Learn about the North Atlantic Right Whale

Tara Dodson has invited Historic City News readers to join Keepers of the Coast on Saturday, January 21, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. until noon, to learn more about North Atlantic Right Whales and their adopted St Augustine area habitat.

Dodson, who is President of the organization, reports that the waters off the Florida-Georgia coast are the only known calving grounds for these fascinating mammals.

The event will take place at the Green Road walkover located at 128 Sea Grove Main Street at St Augustine Beach; south of Crescent Beach.

Participants will meet with Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologists to get a better understanding of how to identify these ocean creatures — the rarest of all large whale species and among the rarest of all marine mammal species.

Each year the North Atlantic Right Whales return to St Johns County; and, sometimes, the whales swim close to shore — making it easy to observe them. “Be sure to bring your binoculars and cameras to document this experience,” Dodson told reporters.

At the conclusion of the event, we will clean the beach of debris.
