Historic City News received a report from Community Affairs Officer Barbara Clifford of the St. Augustine Police Department that a patron at Nobby’s Tavern, located at 10 Anastasia Boulevard, became the victim of an aggravated battery only minutes before the city’s 1:00 a.m. closing time.
Upon arrival, Officer Jon Marston made contact with the victim who told police that she was attempting to break up a verbal dispute when 22 year-old Dexter Lee Gainey hit her over the head with a broken beer bottle — three separate times.
The victim had lacerations on her right eye and the left side of her head.
She was transported to Flagler hospital by rescue.
Nobby’s Tavern had previously banned Gainey; who had been warned not to return to the drinking establishment. Gainey was located by police on the scene and taken into custody. He was charged with aggravated battery and trespassing after warning then was released later the same day after posting $2,000.00 bond.
