Community leader Martin Broudy dies

Well known, liked and respected St Augustine businessman and community leader, Martin David “Baby” Broudy, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 19th at the Bailey Family Center for Caring.

The youngest of three brothers, always known as “Baby”, Martin Broudy was born in St Augustine on October 18, 1928 and was a lifelong resident. Jack and Nathan, the other Broudy brothers, preceded Martin in death.

A depression-era baby, with no more formal education than elementary school, Broudy is remembered as “very good-hearted and generous” by many local families who traded with him at Foodway grocery store on West King Street and Broudy’s Liquors. By the time of his death, Broudy owned five liquor stores; two in St Augustine and one each in Jacksonville Beach, Fleming Island and Julington Creek.

Broudy was president of the conservative First Congregation Sons of Israel for more than 20 years, and a member of Temple Bet Yam Synagogue. He served his synagogues with leadership and generosity. Broudy was a Master Mason; a member of the Scottish Rite of Ashlar Lodge 98 F&AM, Morocco Temple and St Augustine Shrine Club.

Broudy was a civic-minded Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club of St Augustine, and a member of the local Wheeler Dealer Investment Club.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the First Congregation Sons of Israel Cemetery with Rabbi Mark Goldman officiating. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Bailey Family Center for Caring or the First Congregation Sons of Israel.

Broudy is survived by daughter, Joan (Bruce) Broudy-Harris of St Augustine; son, Barry (Dawn) Broudy of St Augustine; grandchildren, Natalie and Porter Broudy, Samantha, Savannah and Shannon Platt, Justin and Jeffery Harris; and great-grandchild, Ryland.
