Looking ahead: community lecture series

Priscilla Proctor, Coordinator of College and Public Relations, reported future dates to the St. Augustine local news desk at Historic City News for upcoming speakers scheduled in the Flagler College spring 2010 Community Lecture Series.

The spring 2010 series will feature speakers with different perspectives and interpretations of literature and films. :

• February 16th – Dr. Tamara Wilson, associate professor of English at Flagler College, “Welcome to the Whedonverse: The Past, Present and Future of Whedon Studies from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Dollhouse”

• March 16th – Rosalinda Sanquiche, Ethical Markets Media executive director, will analyze the book, “The Year of the Flood,” by Margaret Atwood. Her lecture title is “Sex, Seeding and Sustainability in The Year of the Flood.”

• April 20th – Dr. Douglas McFarland – TBA

Tickets are $5 per person for a single lecture, or $15 for the series. Lectures begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Flagler Room, 74 King St. Reservations are suggested, but not required. Flagler College is an independent, four-year, comprehensive baccalaureate college founded in 1968 that offers 25 majors, 27 minors and two pre-professional programs; the largest majors being business, education and communication.

Small by intent, Flagler College has an enrollment of about 2,500 students, as well as a satellite campus at Tallahassee Community College. The main building is Ponce de Leon Hall, built in 1887 as a luxury resort by Henry Flagler, who co-founded the Standard Oil Company with John D. Rockefeller.

The Princeton Review regularly features Flagler as a college that offers quality education at a relatively low cost; tuition is $19,330, including room and board.
