Historic City News was notified by State Attorney R. J. Larizza that, after a one day bench trial, the now 16-year-old St Augustine girl who used red spray paint to paint the eyes and nose of the statues at the west end of the Bridge of Lions, has been found guilty as charged of Criminal Mischief.
The juvenile girl was 15 years-old at the time of the incident on August 16, 2011.
She reportedly caused $721 in damage to the newly refurbished marble lion statues; a first-degree misdemeanor.
Circuit Judge John Alexander sentenced the girl to serve 40 hours of community service, ordered her to pay restitution of $721.00, and ordered her to write a letter of apology to be published.
The defendant will be placed on probation until she turns 19. She must abide by the city’s curfew laws, her driver’s license will be suspended for a year, and other conditions of probation.
Montezz Blackmon, who was then 18 years-old, and the juvenile were arrested by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office on August 19, 2011.
The marble lions are considered a recognizable symbol of the historic city.
