St Johns County Fire Rescue Lieutenant Jeremy Robshaw informed local Historic City News reporters that emergency personnel responded yesterday morning to a reported gas leak on Water Plant Road at about 10:45 a.m. then spent nearly two hours containing the Anhydrous Ammonia.
First responders evacuated the plant facility, secured the immediate area and advised nearby residents downwind from the facility to stay in their homes until the leak was contained.
Hazardous Materials technicians were dispatched to the scene along with firefighters and emergency medical personnel.
HAZMAT 16 entered the plant and located the leaking tank. Technicians report that they were able to stop the leak without incident or injury, then declared the situation “under control” at approximately 12:15 p.m.
The cause of the leak remains under investigation, according to Robshaw.
