The storied 1789 mutiny aboard the historic vessel, the HMS Bounty, is perhaps one of the most infamous tales of mutiny on the high seas; and Wednesday, the replica tall ship that once graced the silver screen, sailed into Matanzas Bay on the noon high tide.
Crowds lined the Bridge of Lions and the St Augustine Municipal Marina to welcome the ship that is docked here throughout the weekend.
The visiting HMS Bounty was built in 1960 for the MGM movie, “Mutiny on the Bounty”, starring Marlon Brando as First Lt. Fletcher Christian, the leader of the revolt, and, Trevor Howard as the cruel Captain William Bligh.
The replica ship was overhauled 2006-2007 and returned to active service; appearing in numerous documentaries and films, including the 2006 Walt Disney motion picture “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”.
Since summer 2007, HMS Bounty has been a regular at tall ship events in England, Europe, up and down both coasts of the United States as well as the Galapagos Islands.
Viewing the vessel from the Bridge of Lions or Municipal Marina is free; however, admission is charged to board the massive ship. Tickets for dockside tours can be purchased each day on site.
