Volunteers construct Haven Horse Ranch pathway

Posted on 04/30/201205/01/2012 By Historic City News

Students in Free Enterprise members from Flagler College reported to Historic City News that they build a brick pathway, together with volunteers from Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation and the St Johns Juvenile Correctional Facility, to help handicapped riders at the Haven Horse Ranch in St Augustine.

The pathway will enable handicapped riders to go directly from the uneven dirt parking lot to the barn. The project will also increase the scope of therapy lessons by allowing these riders to help groom and saddle their horses.

The handicapped riders at the Haven Horse Ranch weren’t the only ones who benefited from the building experience. Working with experienced Lowe’s volunteers, the young men from the St Johns Juvenile Correctional Facility learned everything from how to level the ground to figuring out the brick pattern.

Although the SIFE project improves the life for the handicapped riders, the work performed, which also included actually laying the brick path, should improve the job prospects for the St Johns Juvenile Correctional Facility residents.

The Haven Horse Ranch is a non-profit therapeutic riding center that works with those who suffer from physical and mental disabilities.
