“ROMANZA WEEK”, Monday-Sunday, May 14-20, 2012, clusters over 50 shows and exhibitions in a single week to highlight the remarkable living culture of the Nation’s Oldest City.

This weeklong extravaganza builds to a “Monumental 1812 Constitucion Parade and Celebration” that on Saturday May 19 that commemorates the Bicentennial of Spain’s Constitution, and the only remaining monument to it in the whole world – right here in St. Augustine’s Plaza de la Constitucion.

Romanza’s
Spain Bicentennial Parade
& Celebration
with Latin music, Spanish dancers,
re-enactors and dignitaries.
St. George Street & Plaza de la Constitución
This is the centerpiece event of “Romanza Week”.

The Parade’s Grand Marshall is Former Mayor George Gardner. Proceeding up historic St. George Street, hundreds of costumed participants and many dignitaries arrive at the Plaza de la Constitucion where they are greeted by live Latin music, Spanish dancers and more.

The Celebration hosted by St. Augustine’s Vice Mayor Leanna Freeman, opens with the National Anthems of Spain and the USA. Guest speakers include Richard Willich, Vice Consul of Spain; Father John Guarnizo of the Hispanic Ministry; Father Tom Willis of the St. Augustine Cathedral; Susan Parker of the St. Augustine Historical Society; and a very special guest: “Brigadier Sebastian Kindelan”, who erected the unique 1812 Spanish Constitucion Monument that stands in our Plaza. (Kindelan was the Spanish Governor of Florida from 1812 to 1815, and he highly recommends the water at the Fountain of Youth).
