Park Superintendent Gordie Wilson reported that Historic City News readers can enjoy this Saturday at one of the best known landmarks in St Augustine; Castillo de San Marcos National Monument — and best of all, there is no admission charge in celebration of National Get Outdoors Day.
In fact, all 397 national parks, including Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas National Monument will waive entrance fees so you get a head start on your summer fun, Saturday, June 9.
“Outdoor physical activity is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas are great places to get out and enjoy hiking the dunes boardwalk at Matanzas or walking in the footfalls of the Castillo’s historic soldiers,” Wilson said.
Castillo de San Marcos will offer ranger programs and cannon firing demonstrations. Fort Matanzas will offer tours of the historic fort and most pristine beach dunes in the region.
National Get Outdoors Day, now in its fifth year, encourages Americans, especially youth, to participate in outdoor activities while enjoying the beauty of public lands such as national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges.
Nationwide, hundreds of organizations and businesses will collaborate with Federal, state, and local agencies to provide fun and healthy events at sites throughout the country.
Inside tip for our readers: Castillo de San Marcos will also waive its regular $7 entrance fee on four more days in 2012 –- September 29 (National Public Lands Day) and November 10 to 12 (Veterans Day weekend). Fort Matanzas does not charge an entrance fee.
