Shoar says Commission is “most important” board

Tuesday, Governor Rick Scott announced five appointments to the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, including one re-appointment and a second stint on the commission by St Johns County Sheriff David Shoar.

When former Okaloosa County Sheriff Charlie Morris was convicted of theft, fraud, wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy charges, and sentenced to 71-months in prison, Governor Charlie Crist appointed Shoar to serve out Morris’ term on the commission; beginning September 4, 2009 and ending August 1, 2010.

Shoar said, “The Standards and Training Commission is the most important board in our profession.”

This time, the 50 year-old sheriff succeeds Sheriff Ric L. Bradshaw and is appointed for a term beginning August 10th and ending August 1, 2016.

When asked about the commitments of his new appointment, Shoar told Historic City News that he realizes “the position will be time consuming” and that he hopes he can “add value as my predecessors have”.

The mission of Florida’s Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission is to ensure that all citizens of Florida are served by criminal justice officers who are ethical, qualified, and well trained.

Other appointments this week:

64 year old Steven Steinberg of Davie is the chief of police for the Aventura Police Department. He is reappointed for a term beginning August 1st and ending August 1, 2016.

49 year old Gary T. Calhoun of Madison is the chief of police for the City of Madison. He succeeds Brian K. Lock and is appointed for a term beginning July 24th and ending August 1, 2015.

39 year old Greg S. Hutching of Chipley is the criminal justice training center director at Washington-Holmes Technical Center. He succeeds James C. Brock, Jr., and is appointed for a term beginning August 1st and ending August 1, 2016.

51 year old William “Jay” Romine of Bradenton is the chief of police for the City of Holmes Beach. He succeeds Dennis M. Jones and is appointed for a term beginning July 24th and ending August 1, 2014.
