Historic City News was notified by Homicide Investigator Corporal Brian Wood that charges are pending in a car-vs-motorcycle collision that occurred on SR-A1A at Butler Park East; near the Crescent Beach Fire Station in St Johns County last night.
The driver of the 2011 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, 55 year-old David Krantz who resides in Flagler Beach, sustained serious injuries and was transported by St Johns Rescue to Flagler Hospital in St Augustine — his 57 year-old passenger, Ursula Vassiliou, who also lived in Flagler Beach, was transported by helicopter to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center where she died.
Florida Highway Patrol Trooper D. Schlosser reported that this crash does not appear to be alcohol related, but noted that neither motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet.
According to the investigative report released to Historic City News, the motor vehicle involved, a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by 54 year-old Susan Frances who lives in St Augustine, and her 32 year-old passenger, Tabitha Taylor also of St Augustine.
Both occupants of the Jeep were wearing their seatbelts; Trooper Schlosser indicated that neither appeared to be impaired.
Both the Jeep and motorcycle were traveling south on SR-A1A. The motorcycle was following the Jeep, when the driver slowed to execute a left turn onto Butler Park East Road.
The driver told troopers that she activated her left turn signal in preparation for the left turn as she slowed. At the time that the Jeep began to execute the left turn, the motorcycle attempted to pass on the left.
The collision of the two vehicles caused about $25,000 in damages to the bike.
The right side of the motorcycle collided with the left side of the Jeep in the northbound lane of SR-A1A; sending the motorcycle onto the grassy shoulder.
The bike overturned onto its left side, coming to rest on the grass shoulder facing west.
The Jeep came to rest on Butler Park East Road facing southeast; neither the driver or passenger were injured in the crash.
