Archaeology events next week

Historic City News Readers are invited to attend a St Augustine Archaeological Association lecture presented by City Archaeologist Carl Halbirt entitled, “Twenty-Five Years of Discovery in St Augustine”.

The lecture is offered, without charge, and will be held in the Flagler Room at Flagler College on Tuesday, September 4th at 7:00 p.m. subject to available seating.

Halbirt, and volunteer assistant Mischa Johns, will detail the discoveries and understandings we now have about St Augustine’s past; resulting from a quarter-century of archaeological study in America’s oldest city.

During the First Friday Art Walk, September 7th from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum at Flagler College will present its newest exhibit, “Before and After 1565: A Participatory Examination of St. Augustine’s Native American History”.

The exhibit will remain open for viewing in the Gallery, Monday through Friday, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The exhibit includes artifacts on loan from the City of St Augustine, University of North Florida, Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the Timucuan Ecological Preserve.

While visiting the exhibit Friday evening, stop by the Black Drink stand for a taste of the traditional brew, and take a trolley tour of indigenous sites around St Augustine. To reserve a space on the tour, call (904) 826-8530.
