Peace restored to neighborhood after standoff
Local St. Augustine reporters at Historic City News received an alert at 2:26 p.m. this afternoon that city police officers had responded to a residence on Oglethorpe Boulevard to investigate a suicidal man said to be in possession of a loaded handgun.
Police began evacuating the nearby residences immediately and asked for people to avoid that area.
A police hostage negotiator made contact with the man and worked quickly to evaluate the extent of risk that he posed to himself and others in the area.
The “standoff” was peacefully resolved and the man inside the residence was taken into protective custody.
Community Affairs Officer Barbara Clifford of the St. Augustine Police Department reported back to Historic City News at 3:00 p.m. that residents in the area are being allowed to go back their homes and the roads have been re-opened.
