Protest Sunday billed the “Rally in the Alley”

Former St Augustine Mayor, George Gardner, announced to Historic City News that the residents in Nelmar Terrace and Fullerwood Park Historic Districts do not plan to slow down their efforts to put the brakes on plans for a 7-Eleven store and gas station along San Marco Avenue; a northern entrance corridor to the city.

Being billed as a “Rally in the Alley”, the protest is scheduled, at the site, for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday and is expected to continue until 3:00 p.m.

The site, which is currently a vacant lot, was approved, on appeal, to the City Commission; despite general feeling that commercial zoning put in place in 1975 didn’t envision today’s mega-stations.

Residents and neighbors feel that construction of a gas station and 24-hour convenience store on the San Marco Avenue corridor, especially at its intersection with already traffic-congested May Street, will result is health and safety risks beyond the public convenience provided by the business.

The plan still has to pass Entrance Corridor Guidelines design.
