Find the Celt in St Augustine

130309_5522Historic City News reporters spent the afternoon touring the Celtic heritage displays, sampling authentic cuisine, tasting Scotch whisky and Murphy’s, and browsing the wares of dozens of exhibitors and entertainers as far as the eye could see, during the St Augustine Celtic Heritage and Music Festival going on this weekend.

Today’s activities began with a lively St Patrick’s Day Parade through the streets of downtown St Augustine; concluding at Francis Field on West Castillo Drive which has been transformed into the city’s cultural center for everything Celtic.

Live on stage today, and throughout the two-day festival, Scottish and Irish bands are playing both traditional tunes and modernized renditions of ancient Celtic music; while Celtic clans from around the world are showing their ancestral pride.

In addition to celebrating the great traditions of music and dance, Highland games athletes are demonstrating their mind-boggling strength — pitching 50 lb. weights and hoisting a javelin the size of a telephone pole, among other contests.
