FSDB high school students visit Capitol today

Executive Director Nancy Bloch reported to Historic City News that high school students of the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind in St Augustine traveled to Tallahassee today as part of activities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Day at the Capitol, sponsored by the Florida Association of the Deaf.

The local school’s president, Dr. Jeanne Glidden Prickett, will be among several presenters in the Capitol Rotunda, who began this morning at 9:00 a.m. with a presentation of the National Anthem delivered in American Sign Language.

“We are delighted that our students will have this unique opportunity to see and experience state government in action,” President Prickett told Historic City News reporters. “This visit also makes it possible for our students to express their gratitude to legislative members for their support of our school.”

The FSDB Dance Troupe will perform between 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. at Waller Park on the west side of the new Capitol, across from the Supreme Court building. The Troupe performs throughout the state for schools, colleges, civic and service organizations.

During their visit in Tallahassee, these students, who are either taking government classes or serving as officers of the Student Council and the Junior National Association of the Deaf, will learn more about how our state government works — meeting legislative members and staff, observing legislators in action, touring the state Capitol and Supreme Court buildings, and visiting the Florida Historic Capitol Museum.
