Safety First when enjoying legal fireworks this year

St Johns County Fire Rescue officials are reminding Historic City News readers to use extreme caution when using or discharging fireworks of any kind during 4th of July celebrations.

In the State of Florida, as well as in St Johns County, it is illegal to ignite any type of fireworks that either go boom, or leave the ground.

Officials encourage residents to attend public fireworks displays put on by licensed professional vendors, in lieu of staging private fireworks demonstrations.

The public displays are permitted on a case-by-case basis by the local fire marshal, who ensures that the fireworks are used in a controlled and safe environment.

Below are some helpful safety tips to follow if you do plan on using legal recreational fireworks:

• Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks

• Read and follow all warnings and instructions

• Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks.

• Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves, and flammable materials.

• Never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned.

• Keep a bucket of water nearby in case of a malfunction or fire.
