The St Augustine Police Department asked Historic City News readers to keep in mind this evening that, if you plan to park downtown for the fireworks display, parking is limited.
If you leave your vehicle in an area posted with “No Parking” signs, expect to be towed starting at 5:00 p.m., according to Public Information Officer Mark Samson.
“Your best place to park is the parking garage near the Visitors Information Center,” Samson told Historic City News. “If you are parking downtown, place your valuables in the trunk, and make sure you LOCK your car.”
If you are walking downtown please wear bright clothing and watch for vehicles, bicycles and other roadway traffic.
“Remember, the only legal fireworks in Florida are of the sparkler type,” reporters were told. “Anything that explodes or leaves the ground is illegal; at a minimum they will be confiscated.”
As the fireworks show ends please be patient as it’s going to take a couple of hours getting out of the downtown area as traffic will be slow.
“If you are watching the fireworks from North City please take Ponce de Leon Boulevard, north to SR-16 or Lewis Speedway,” Samson advised. “If you are watching the fireworks from downtown or south of the city take King Street to Ponce de Leon Boulevard and make your way south to SR-207 or points further south.”
Samson stated that St Augustine swells to more than 60,000 people in the downtown area for the fireworks show.
The St Augustine Police Department emphasized the importance of cooperation and patience when navigating through the residents and visitors who are here to enjoy this evening’s activities and hopes you will not let traffic spoil your 4th of July.
