Historic City News has learned that St Johns County Chamber of Commerce Government Relations Manager, Carol Saviak, has been re-appointed to the Federal Judicial Nominating Commission for the Middle District of Florida, from an announcement by United States Senators Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio.
Florida’s Judicial Nominating Commission is a statewide panel charged with selecting nominees for presidential appointments to federal judgeships, US Attorneys and US Marshals. The Middle District of Florida extends from Fort Myers to Tampa to Jacksonville, and includes St Johns County.
“I am extremely honored to have been re-appointed by Senator Rubio,” Saviak told reporters. “The federal judicial branch plays an important role within our American system of government. I am pleased to have the opportunity to continue to work to ensure well-qualified candidates are nominated to fill these critical positions, as they are lifetime appointments.”
The newly reappointed Commission was recently charged with the task of recommending candidates to fill three positions. Applications are currently being accepted for two US District Judge and US Attorney positions in the Middle District.
Saviak has the distinction of being one of only a few citizens serving on the Commission who is not a practicing attorney. She was initially appointed to the Federal Judicial Nominating Commission in 2011, and is re-appointed to serve a second two-year term.
Prior to joining the staff of the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce in May 2011, Saviak served as the executive director of a statewide non-profit organization whose focus was the preservation of Constitutionally-protected private property rights.
Carol and her husband, Flagler College professor, Dr. Joseph Saviak, are residents of St Augustine.
