Legendary jazz-rock icons Walter Becker and Donald Fagen rocked the St Augustine Amphitheatre last night; one of over four-dozen stops throughout North America for the Steely Dan Mood Swings: 8 Miles to Pancake Day Tour, and Historic City News special events photographer Mark Cubbedge was in the house.
Concertgoers got an evening of the same high-level of musical excellence the band is known for. This was a cascade of color carried along by Becker, Fagen, eight brilliant supporting musicians, and three superb backing vocalists.
On stage the artists were joined by Keith Carlock on drums, Freddie Washington on bass, Jim Beard on keyboards, and Jon Herington on guitar. Three sublime, soulful songbirds known as “The Borderline Brats” provided vocals.
The audience was treated to selections from the extraordinary four-decade catalog, rich with infectious tunes, bodacious harmonies, irresistible grooves, and sleek, subversive lyrics — punctuated by blazing solo work and rich ensembles.
The tour is off to its next stop: an appearance on September 11 in Orlando at the Hard Rock Live.
