Historic City News received a communication from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee that reveals that five Democrats in the US Senate, including Florida’s Senator Bill Nelson, have refused to co-sponsor legislation to protect the civil rights of homosexual people.
The Committee provided reporters the results of research they have done related to state laws that exclude protection of civil rights for homosexual people and they say the only way to make progress is to enact a federal ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation.
“Right now, because there is no federal law barring employment discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, you can legally be fired for being gay in 28 states,” the public affairs spokesman told reporters. “We need your help to make sure Congress adopts this anti-discrimination bill — making the prohibition of such activity the law of the land.”
The Committee is pushing a proposed congressional act that they say is “long overdue” to be passed. Although a federal anti-discrimination law may seem like common sense, this bill has been introduced nine times since 1994 without success.
Those interested in the proposed bill and its history should search the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which supporters say would finally make job discrimination, based on sexual orientation or gender identity, illegal nationwide.
