According to a witness interviewed at the scene, 41-year-old Shawn P. Miller, whose residence address was reported as 3240 Lewis Speedway in St Augustine, attempted to cross the intersection of Wildwood Drive at US-1 earlier today, from east to west, on his bicycle when he was struck by a 2002 Mazda Tribute; sustaining critical injuries.
The Mazda was traveling northbound on US-1 and had the green light, according to a statement from a witness to the crash. Miller was in an area that is not designated for pedestrians to cross and his traffic light was red, the witness said.
The driver of the car, 44-year-old Samuel Wayne Lake of St Augustine, told troopers investigating the collision that he was unable to stop. He struck the bicyclist on the right side with the left front of his vehicle and came to a stop immediately north of the intersection. Neither the driver, nor the passenger, was injured.
The bicyclist came to rest north of the intersection just beyond the white edge-line of the roadway. US-1 northbound was shut down for at least an hour and traffic had to be diverted. Next of kin was notified at 1:51 p.m.
Miller was stabilized at the scene and transferred to UF Jacksonville Hospital.
