The 15-year-old St. Johns County girl who was injured in a hit-and-run collision on Kenton Morrison Road and Four Mile Road about 8:30 p.m. last night, has died during surgery at UF Health Jacksonville.
The teenage victim has been identified as Haley N. Smith of St. Augustine. She was walking with two friends when she was struck. The vehicle did not stop and was last seen fleeing south on Holmes Boulevard.
Weather conditions prohibited emergency medical personnel from evacuating the victim to the trauma center at UF Health Jacksonville by air ambulance, as originally planned.
Deputies investigating the crime are examining evidence at the scene and are seeking any surveillance video from the area. Based on statements from two other pedestrians walking with Smith, neither of which were injured, police are seeking a small pick-up truck; possibly gold in color.
Anyone with any information concerning the identity of this vehicle or driver is asked to call Traffic Unit Deputy Joseph McGinnis at the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office at 209-1498. You can also remain anonymous and possibly be eligible for a cash reward by calling Crimestoppers of N.E. Florida at 1(888) 277-TIPS.
