After months of speculation about its future, local Historic City News reporters found that the original Dunkin Donuts location has re-opened for business — and customers are quickly finding their way back.
The once popular coffee and donut shop, originally started by Randy Beverly in the early 1970’s on San Marco Avenue at San Carlos Avenue, had been closed for several months after the former franchise owner succumbed to declining sales and the tough economy.
After being rescued by New Hartford Connecticut businessman, John Griffey, the original restaurant was closed for extensive remodeling while the second location at 1001 South Ponce De Leon Boulevard remained open.
Sunday, the San Marco location reopened with a clean updated look inside that included additional seating, new service counters and additional work to the kitchen. A new Dunkin Donuts menu includes more baked items and extended breakfast selections.
Yesterday, the Ponce de Leon Boulevard location was closed to allow time for Griffey’s company, JYG South LLC, to rebuild and reorganize the interior. Artist renderings of the location just south of SR-207 indicate a new floor plan, expanded seating and continued drive-thru service.
