Not a lot of news to report today, lots was happening — but most of the activity was around a dinner table, surrounded by family and friends, two and four-legged, shaved or furry, we accept each other, “warts and all” as my mother once told me.
This is the first year our family has been far enough away from each other that we could not get everyone together; so, despite the fact that my bride loves to cook, and she’s pretty damn good with her KitchenAid, we grabbed the closest youngin’, the only one still living in St Augustine, and the three of us made our way to the Casa Monica for the Thanksgiving buffet at 95 Cordova.
My sister-in-law, her husband and their kids, are down in Broward County, and our daughter and son-in-law moved to Colorado this year, daughter number two is living in Ohio, so we have become the quintessential “empty-nesters”. Like a lot of families, especially blended ones, we try to rotate holidays, and we’re thankful that we’ll get a chance to see the youngest next month for Christmas.
My wife and I decided we weren’t going to be an accountant or an editor today. We thought it would be nice to spend the day together and just be a family … a smaller family, true, but it’s the family we have, and the family we have in our hearts that really matter.
We’ll be back at it tomorrow, refreshed and five pounds fatter, but very thankful for all the folks that are part of our family, our extended family, and, of course, the thousands of Historic City News readers, our advertisers and sponsors, who make it possible to do the jobs we love to do. For all of you, we are humbled and very thankful.
