As all Historic City News readers are preparing to welcome 2014, I want to take a moment to make a suggestion — drink responsibly and don’t be afraid to call a cab for a ride home.
Every police agency has notified us that they are each conducting their own stepped up enforcement of DUI cases tonight — one is even reporting that there will be at least one driver “check point”.
I don’t like to write-up traffic homicide reports and I seem to have been doing a lot of that lately. It’s just too damn easy for you to call or ask the bartender to call for a taxicab home.
So, pop the cork on your favorite bottle of bubbly, I’m partial to Dom Pérignon myself, sing Auld Lang Syne, make your New Year’s resolutions, and, of course, it will be black-eye peas and collard greens tomorrow to bring us all prosperity in 2014. But none of that will come to pass if you try to drink and drive tonight — and if you see someone while you’re celebrating tonight who is headed towards the parking lot and looking for their car, be a “trusty friend”, take their keys and call a cab for them. They’ll live to thank you tomorrow.
And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give me a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.
