St Johns County Tax Collector, Dennis Hollingsworth, reported to Historic City News that yesterday, Florida Governor Rick Scott has signed the bill that lowers vehicle registration fees and saves state taxpayers millions of dollars.
The tax collector’s office fills the role of tag agency and license bureau for the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, who closed their local offices in St Augustine several years ago.
“Registration fees are set to decrease, but not until September 1st,” Hollingsworth told local news reporters. “Until September 1, I am urging motorists to renew their registrations for only one year, instead of opting for a two-year renewal; that way, they can take advantage of the lower fees next year.”
The state department’s Executive Director, Julie Jones, said, “We look forward to continuing to provide a high level of service, but at a lower cost to our customers.”
Taxpayer advocates are praising Governor Rick Scott and the Florida Legislature for reducing annual motor vehicle registration fees; allowing Floridians to keep more of their money in their own pockets. They report that it is incumbent on agencies of government to streamline and work within existing or lower budgets without threatening to cut essential services if they are not granted continued tax increases.
