As part of its free monthly lecture series, Historic City News reporters learned that in the August 7th presentation at Mission San Luis, Derek Boyd Hankerson will speak on the topic of “Boys and Girls Clubs of America” — from the perspective of an alumnus of two clubs in suburban Maryland.
Hankerson was a Boys and Girls Clubs member from ages 5 to 18. He will discuss the life skills he learned from the club, as well as how sports, self-esteem, and belief in oneself help him succeed in life. Hankerson, who is a frequent guest columnist and contributor to Historic City News, will discuss the origins of the Boys & Girls Clubs, its history and its effect on youth who are Boys & Girls Clubs members.
Hankerson currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Club in St. Augustine and has been a leader in numerous community projects in support of the local Boys and Girls Club, Fort Mose, multicultural education and heritage tourism. He and his wife live in St. Augustine where he serves as Managing Partner of Freedom Road, LLC.
The lecture series at Mission San Luis is held the first Saturday of each month and is an opportunity to learn more about regional topics including history, archaeology, and, of course, Mission San Luis.
Regular admission fees will be charged for attendees wishing to visit the site.
