Jacksonville attorney Hank Coxe is representing former St Augustine Beach Mayor Frank Charles in the shooting incident that occurred at Charles’ residence in the 4600 block of Pecos Court in Cimarrone at about 3:30 a.m. Friday night.
According to Commander Charles E. Mulligan with the St Johns County Sheriff’s Office, 48-year-old Charles shot 27-year-old Blake William Miles multiple times while Miles was inside Charles’ home. Information about Miles’ condition was not available. Mulligan also said Charles has been cooperative and no one has been arrested.
The relationship between Charles and Miles was not immediately clear; however, it has been reported that they were employer and former employee — in fact, in July, Charles said he had to fire Miles from his job after a confrontation that led to Miles arrest at the Dogtown USA pet resort in Mandarin. Charles owns that business.
Charles told deputies that Miles was staying at his home temporarily while he was looking for another job. According to Charles, the reason is because Miles is the son of one of his business partners.
Charles says that he was asleep at his home before the altercation; and, he was injured in the early morning struggle, as well. He said in published reports that he was taken to a hospital and released. Coxe told reporters that Charles is not going to comment further.
