Hit-and-run victim critical – suspect located

The St Johns County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit reported to Historic City News that the investigation into the hit-and-run truck-vs-pedestrian collision that occurred about 2:10 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Krystal on US-1 South, is moving forward.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Robin Lynn Wetherington who resides in St. Augustine. According to witnesses at the scene, Wetherington was hit by a 2006 Blue Dodge pickup truck, driven by a 31-year-old unidentified St. Augustine man.

“The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported by air ambulance to UF Health in Jacksonville,” sheriff’s spokesman Kevin Kelshaw told local reporters. “She remains in critical condition at this time.”

During the investigation, deputies determined that the driver of the pickup truck was involved in a physical altercation in the parking lot of a nearby restaurant. During the physical altercation, the pickup truck driver, reportedly in an attempt to get away from his attackers, got into his vehicle.

According to the incident report, the driver began rapidly driving, back-and-forth, in the parking lot. At some point, while accelerating rapidly in reverse, the driver backed into the victim then fled the crash scene.

A witness saw the vehicle fleeing the scene and followed it in his vehicle. The witness was able to direct investigators to the truck; located in the area of Shores Boulevard and Dorado Drive. A traffic stop was conducted, evidence has been obtained, and numerous witnesses have been questioned, according to Kelshaw.

No arrests to report at this time, however the investigation is active and continuing.
