Historic City News was informed that St. Johns County Commissioner Cyndi Stevenson submitted her irrevocable notice of resignation to both St. Johns County Supervisor of Elections Vicky Oakes, and Florida Governor Rick Scott this week.
Per Section 99.012(3) of the Florida Statutes, an officer of a county government must submit their resignation 10 days prior to qualifying commencing for another office. The Division of Elections has set qualifying for the Special Election for House District 17 to commence at 8:00 AM December 1 and close at Noon December 2.
“It has been a unique honor for me to serve the citizens of St. Johns County for the past ten years as their County Commissioner,” Stevenson said. “The decision to run for the House District 17 seat was not one that I made in haste, but I know that more than ever we need experienced, reasonable representation in Tallahassee in order to grow our economy, enhance the incredible schools that we have and preserve our wonderful quality of life.”
As there are less than two years left on the Commissioner Stevenson’s term, the Governor will appoint a replacement and therefore no extra cost will be incurred by the county to fill the seat. Stevenson is one of three resignations for elected officials who have their eyes on Senator John Thrasher’s Senate seat, or one of the two seats in the Florida legislature vacated by Travis Hutson and Ronald “Doc” Renuart.
“Tallahassee is no place for on the job training and the experience that I have gained as a County Commissioner and CPA have prepared me to hit the ground running,” Stevenson wrote in a press release.
