St Augustine Mayor Nancy Shaver attended her first groundbreaking ceremony after last night’s investiture ceremonies, welcoming the St. Augustine Shipyard whose spokesmen are promising to bring jobs and money to St. Johns County.
There was an official groundbreaking this morning, but work is well underway on the former Luhrs and DESCO site. It’s about 50 acres, with 1,000 feet spanning the San Sebastian River. According to St Johns County’s director of economic development, Melissa Glasgow, the project is expected to have dry boat storage, a marina restaurants, and a hotel. Glasgow pointed out that the developer’s initial investment in Phase 1 is $11 million.
“Today is the difference between reality and proposal. So today, it’s real,” co-owner and developer Bob Million said. “We will create hundreds of jobs for craftsmen, small engine repairmen, canvas workers, wood workers, boat repairmen and other general marine related employment.”
Shaver said that she was pleased to see new jobs being created from a year-round employer who is not affected by seasonal tourism, in a field that pays well above minimum wage.
