Letter: HCN gave all Republicans a fair shake

Dear Editor,
Well done Historic City News! Thanks for giving all the Republican candidates in this Senate race a fair shake! That is more than I can say for the other print media outlets, and in particular, The Record.
McDonald is certainly more qualified than Travis Hutson, who has no work experience other than working for his millionaire dad.
All of the candidates are good people and have their strengths and weaknesses. The question is who is best for this time and this job?
Doc Renuart is certainly the most experienced candidate running because of his 6 years in the House. Travis and his Dad have the most money and are trying to buy the election and started the “mudslinging” and distorting of people’s records. But we all need to think beyond the politics of the race and deal with what I think is a more important issue.
Am I the only one that is upset with four elected St Johns county officials resigning their positions to run for a better office and costing the taxpayers a million bucks?
With the exception of Senator Thrasher who I am sure got his dream job, (who wouldn’t want to be the President of their alma mater), the rest have made a serious mistake I think. When a candidate runs for office there is an implied contract that if you vote for and elect me I will serve out my term in office and do the business of the people.
When you break the promise that you made to the voters by resigning right after they elect you, why should they ever trust you again?
I do not recall any of these people coming to me or to the county Republican Party and disclosing, while they were running in the Republican Primary, that, if they were elected as incumbents, they would resign and seek another position.
Imagine how many of the voters feel in the Republican Party in Flagler County. After spending thousands of hours getting Travis Hutson elected so they would have a local representative from Flagler, he ups and quits at the first chance of a better opportunity. How about the potential candidates that might have run if Mr. Hutson had not lied to them about his intentions of quitting?
If you are a voter who is upset about this situation please do not stay home because that will not fix the problem. To reward bad behavior will only bring more of the same behavior.
You can make a difference if you do not like Jacksonville developers and attorneys running St Johns County. Take your body and your vote and go to the polls and quit voting for the candidates they support.
Go to the polls on January 27th and vote for the candidate of your choice and please consider all of the contestants including Dennis McDonald, their qualifications, education, business experience and will they represent the voters or the special interest of the developers and the political elite.
