Local Historic City News reporters were informed that last night’s shift was not a typical run of calls and writing of reports for St Augustine Police Officer Alina Shirshikova.
Sergeant Brandon Embrey reported to Officer Shirshikova that four motherless baby raccoons had been found in the City and St Johns County Animal Control could not respond.
“We sometimes have to deal with the unexpected,” Shirshikova told reporters. “Sergeant Embrey knew that I am an animal advocate and would know how to help the raccoons.”
The infant raccoons, less than three weeks old, still had not opened their eyes when Shirshikova arrived on the scene. She placed them in a box then went to a local pet store to purchase animal milk formula and supplies.
After her shift, the officer brought the baby raccoons home. She did some more research on caring for baby raccoons, resulting in another trip to CVS; this time to purchase Pedialyte to make sure the raccoons stayed hydrated.
While caring for the raccoons, which are still wild animals and not pets, Shirshikova contacted The Wildlife Rescue Coalition of Northeast Florida, who agreed to accept the animals.
Shirshikova delivered the lucky raccoons to their new home in Jacksonville today. Learn more about The Wildlife Rescue Coalition of Northeast Florida on their website http://wildlifecoalition.com
