The 2014 Florida Legislature designated the bridge on US-1 that crosses over the San Sebastian River as the “Ponce de Leon Bridge” in recognition of the Spanish explorer’s discovery of Florida in 1513.
That designation becomes official Thursday when new signs are unveiled at 2:30 p.m. by St. Augustine city officials and representatives from the Florida Department of Transportation.
Although members of the public may attend, parking in the area on the north side of the bridge is very limited. Use extra caution while driving in the area across from the main fire station of the City of St Augustine.
FDOT completed the replacement of the bridge in early 2013 at a cost of $13.5 million.
