Letter: Why do only some people get tickets?
City Resident
St Augustine, FL
Dear Editor:
I have been a resident of St. Augustine for ten years and last weekend, I attended my first Rhythm and Ribs.
Saturday evening at around 6:26 p.m., on my way home, I stopped for a cup of coffee at a shop on St George Street.
I pulled into the city parking lot across from Tolomato Cemetery, just off Cordova Street. Later, I learned that people pay $80.00 monthly in that lot for a spot without a meter. I also learned that the permit for that lot applies 24-hours a day, every day.
I made a $35.00 mistake. I learned my lesson, and paid the fine.
But, this morning, I decided to take my camera to see how this special permit at the Tolomato lot is being handled. I caught a City worker parked in the same spot where I parked and got my “Permit Holders Only” ticket. He had stopped to eat on St. George Street, too. But he didn’t get a ticket.
Later I discovered a City of St Augustine SUV parked on an expired meter and saw the parking violation officer pass. When she did not issue a ticket, I approached her to ask why. She told me, “That’s how we handled things”.
I would like to hear from city officers some type of remedy to this unfair treatment to taxpayers.
