Among the diverse and talented group of students gracing Flagler College’s halls and classrooms this fall are two Lewis-Wiley scholarship students, according to an announcement received by Historic City News this week.
Ian Doherty, of Milwaukee, and Luke Mitchell, of Tullahoma, Tenn., were each awarded the scholarship, given to two incoming students who have demonstrated academic achievement and leadership. Both are majoring in Sport Management this fall.
“I am so excited to be at Flagler,” Doherty said. “Flagler clearly has high academic standards — something that I try to uphold for myself as well — and tons of great activities that students can be a part of.”
The Wisconsin native claimed second place in the world for his age group in Irish dance, a hobby he has pursued for the last 13 years. In addition, he competed as the captain of the varsity basketball, soccer and golf teams, and has been recognized as a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association scholar athlete by the state’s governing body in high school sports. While maintaining a 4.0 grade point average, he also enjoyed singing for his high school’s chamber ensemble choir, playing in the hand bell choir and acting as a lead role for many of his school’s annual musicals.
His eclectic pursuits are one of the reasons why he chose Flagler College as his home for the next four years. “It is so small and seems to be extremely understanding about a student’s many interests,” he said. “It seems the perfect place for me.”
Doherty hopes to try out for the varsity basketball team, minor in Spanish and join the campus Glee Club.
Mitchell is another student who excels at juggling various talents. The Tullahoma High School grad, also a 4.0 GPA holder, was a top bowler in his district, finished second in tennis singles at the district level and played basketball. He received his high school’s Business award for “Best Business Student” his junior and senior year, and was a member of the National Honors Society and Mu Alpha Theta.
“When I visited Flagler, it felt like home,” he said. “Flagler is a close knit college, and what is better than having a whole college as your family?”
Mitchell credits the strength of the Sport Management program and a supportive admissions counselor that “made him feel like family” for choosing Flagler.
The scholarship recipients will join 631 other new Saints this fall, for a total of approximately 2,500 students.
The funds for the Lewis-Wiley Scholar Awards are provided by a private trust established by Mr. Lawrence Lewis, Jr., and his sister, Mrs. James L. Wiley.
