Single-engine aircraft catches fire on tarmac at St Augustine airport

Northeast Florida Regional Airport superintendent Kevin Harvey reported to Historic City News that the engine of a flight school airplane caught fire while the aircraft was on the runway tonight at about 8:15 p.m.

The two occupants onboard the single-engine Piper were able to escape the plane uninjured according to St Johns County Fire Rescue. Three fire engines responded, and the flames were extinguished in a matter of a few minutes.

Florida Aviation Career Training, who has classrooms located at the airport, is the registered owner of the aircraft.

A fire investigator is on the scene to find the cause of the fire.
