Retire Old Glory and cell phones with honor

As Memorial Day and Independence Day approaches, St Johns County Tax Collector Dennis W. Hollingsworth, CFC, reminds Historic City News readers that when their American Flag is no longer serviceable, give it a proper retirement.

Additionally, Hollingsworth has established each branch office of his agency as a collection point for recycling of cell phones, chargers and accessories in support of the “Cell Phones for Soldiers” program.

“There is so much we can do to support our country and our military, it is an honor for me to do my patriotic duty and ensure the proper retirement of our flags and help our military stay in touch with family while deployed,” Hollingsworth said. “We live in the greatest nation on Earth, and honoring our flag and soldiers in this manner is a privilege for me and my staff.”

Assistant Tax Collector Jennifer Ravan told Historic City News that “Cell Phones for Soldiers” is a national non-profit organization that converts old cell phones and chargers that have been collecting dust in nightstands and kitchen drawers into cellphone minutes so the men and women in the United States Armed Services can call their loved ones.

“Simply drop off worn, faded or tattered flags at your closest location of the St Johns County Tax Collector,” Ravan said.

American Legion Post 37 is working with Hollingsworth’s office by collecting and properly disposing of the unserviceable flags in accordance with United States protocols.
