The Florida Lottery reported to Historic City News on Monday that St Johns County resident, John Harris Golbranson III, is the latest winner in the $10 million Florida Cash Scratch-Off game. The lucky player has claimed a $1 million prize.
The 59-year-old Golbranson, and his wife Barbara, have been married since May 27, 1978. He retired from Sysco and relocated from Brockton, Massachusetts to St Augustine where he and his family now reside.
“My wife and I were shocked to see it was a $1 million winning ticket,” Golbranson told reporters. “Buying a few extra Scratch-Offs really ended up paying off!”
Reportedly, Golbranson cashed $100 in other scratch-off tickets then decided to parlay his winnings by buying a few more of the $25 tickets.
Golbranson chose to receive his winnings as a one-time, lump sum payment of $792,462. The lucky retiree purchased the winning ticket from Publix on Tuscan Way in St. Augustine. The seller receives a $2,000 bonus commission for selling the winning ticket.
The $25 game, $10,000,000 Florida Cash, features more than 11 million winning tickets and more than $624 million in total cash prizes. The game’s overall odds of winning are one-in-2.88.
