Proposed FEMA floodplain map updates available for review

Michael Ryan, communications manager for St Johns County government, informed local Historic City News reporters that our readers can preview proposed Federal Emergency Management Agency floodplain maps which, if approved, could significantly make lower-cost homeowner’s insurance available to residents.

A recent floodplain study was the basis for the redrawn maps which were released in May.  It was discovered that portions of the County qualified for new flood zone designations.

“Residents and business owners are encouraged to review the proposed updates to determine the potential status of their property,” Ryan told local reporters.

FEMA will conduct a public meeting in the near future for residents to learn about the new flood zones.  Since the redrawn maps can impact homeowner flood insurance policies and rates, the meeting will be an opportunity to learn about the flood zone appeal process.
