Historic commemoration of Founding Day in St Augustine

On Saturday, September 10, 2016, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and ending approximately at noon, Historic City News readers are invited to attend the re-enactment of the landing of Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés’ presented by the volunteers of Florida Living History, Inc.

The commemoration event will be staged at Mission Nombre de Dios; the traditional site of Menéndez’ landing.  The founding of the City of St Augustine, four hundred and fifty-one years ago on September 8, 1565, makes St Augustine the oldest continuously occupied, European city, port, and parish in the continental United States.

Admission to all Florida Living History events, including this annual event, is free of charge.  This re-enactment is provided to the public by Florida Living History’s volunteers as a service to our community, to our state, and to our nation.

This heritage Event will feature:

• the historical re-enactment of Capitán-General Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés’ landing in 1565 by Florida Living History, Inc.;
• a Mass of Thanksgiving, celebrated by the Most Reverend Felipe J. Estévez, Bishop of St. Augustine;
• a proclamation by the Honorable Nancy Shafer, Mayor and Commissioner of the City of St. Augustine.
• Ample, free parking is available on-site. Seating is limited, so please consider bringing a folding chair.
