Kim Brumfield, Community Awareness Coordinator for the Betty Griffin House in St. Johns County, reported to Historic City News that yesterday evening’s candlelight vigil and Silent Witness exhibit was a well attended success.
Red, life-sized silent witness silhouettes and red flag posters lined the sidewalk at the St. Augustine Main Library; each representing a person who once lived, worked, had neighbors, friends and family before their death.
Betty Griffin House sponsored the exhibit and vigil as part of their domestic violence awareness month activities. Executive Director Joyce Mahr asked for a moment of silence to remember and honor the women, men and children who were victims of domestic homicide in St. Johns County.
“It was very emotional for many, and an amazing awareness event for Betty Griffin House,” Brumfield said.
Sheriff’s Chief of Staff, Joel Bolante, spoke about community support to the attendees — most of whom were holding purple-shrouded candlesticks. Purple is the color for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Mahr reminded the crowd, “Betty Griffin House is working to end domestic and sexual abuse in St. Johns County.”
Brumfield offered, “A huge thank you to all that attended the last night.”
